Do you know the purpose of your life? When you see people actually DOING what they were created to do, how does that affect you? Do you think, “Are they a different class of people? Have the rest of us just been left behind in life? Is it just too late to start making better choices?” I say, “No, it’s not too late.” The choices we make starting NOW are where the real changes happen.
“What are you waiting for?” is a thought I tend to have quite often. It seems like I’m always saying or thinking, “I just have to wait until such and such happens…” before I can move on and accomplish whatever goal I may have in mind. The problem when I do that is that I find myself waiting and making excuses rather than actually accomplishing things. It’s one thing to be patient and “wait upon the Lord”, but it’s another thing to just be lazy.
For example, I took a whole year to finish my upcoming 5 song EP. I have a few valid excuses, such as working full-time, resting on the Sabbath, being a husband, being a parent, and all of the responsibility that comes with those things. However, I’m sure there were plenty of opportunities I missed when I could have been working on SOMETHING.
It’s the same thing with this post you’re reading right now, actually. Lots of “life” has been happening around the Bowen house, some good things, some not so great. Just the kinds of things that tend to make the days blur together. To be honest, it’s really easy to get caught up in mundane daily tasks. Before we know it, several months have gone by without feeling like we’re accomplishing all that we should.
Can you relate to these issues? Well then, what can we do about it? How can we break this vicious cycle that seems to have us spinning around and around? I’ve also found myself asking, “What SHOULD I be doing RIGHT NOW?” When I have a clear goal in mind and a plan of action, it’s not such a challenge. Here are three tips to help you achieve your goals.
- Start by making a list of your current and future goals. Write it down! That’s what my wife and I do. (Thanks to Kwyndala for teaching me that habit!) It gives you something tangible to physically look at so you don’t have to work so hard imagining or remembering. It works! I know a few people that do actually appear to “have it all figured out” and are always doing something that seems meaningful and worthwhile. I bet they’ve made a list or two!
- Find like-minded people who will understand your ambitions and encourage you. If they have similar goals, even better. Build each other up. Knowing you’re not alone can be a huge confidence boost!
- Cut out any negative talk or thinking that you may be caught up in. Build a habit of focusing in on the positive aspects of your goals. Think and speak positively. After all, the first person standing in the way of your progress is probably YOU! I know for certain that’s true for me. I’m the hardest person that I have to deal with!
I know the MOST important things are serving our Creator, spending precious quality time with our family and other loved ones, and making sure everyone is fed, clothed, and provided for. Those are a given. If I’m not doing those things, nothing else is worth it. That said, the “other” meaningful and worthwhile things I’m talking about are those that we may consider “bucket list” items. No, I don’t mean skydiving. I mean the things you NEED to do because it’s part of who you were created to be. What is the heartfelt passion that our Wonderful Creator has placed in you?
What is keeping you from fulfilling your purpose?
